Dear Bookworms,
If you haven’t heard of The Martian by now, you’ve probably been living under a large rock. Andy Weir’s bestselling science-fiction novel has soared to great heights recently, with top reviews and a 2015 film adaptation starring Matt Damon. The Wall Street Journal called the book “the best pure sci-fi novel in years.” And for good reason.
The story starts with main character Mark Watney stranded on Mars. His team has evacuated the planet after a dust storm, assuming that their crew mate has already died in the disaster. Mark is left with limited supplies, damaged machinery, and no way to signal to Earth that he’s actually still alive. Through insurmountable obstacles, Mark puts his engineering skills and cunning ingenuity to the test in the ultimate quest to stay alive until NASA can come back to rescue him.
Let me preface this review by saying that I am not an avid science-fiction reader. Since science has never been a favorite subject of mine, I was hesitant to pick up this title in fear that it wouldn’t keep me interested. I can assure you that I misjudged this book. Weir’s writing, while thoroughly researched and technical, never left me feeling out of the loop. His descriptions are written with enough practicality that any reader can grasp the concepts of the story and understand the basic principles of science at play.
It also doesn’t hurt that Mark Watney is an incredibly likable character.
With his strong sense of humor, quick thinking wit, and down-to-earth personality, he’ll hold your attention and keep you laughing throughout each passing day on Mars. You’ll root for him from the very first page.
The Martian is a thrilling adventure story with a plot that continuously surprises readers. The story’s suspense will have you hooked, making it impossible to put down.
Happy reading!
