Hello Beautiful People,
If you didn’t know this already, I’m a fan of SMASH, something we support here at The Write Teacher(s). So, for those of you who are haven’t been watching from the very beginning here’s a lovely little list of WHY you should watch this awesome television show.
1. It’s a teleivsion show about Broadway, written by actual WRITERS and performed by REAL ACTORS AND SINGERS. We adore Broadway. And New York. And scripted, real, good television. And good quality music. It’s everything we love all rolled into one hour.
2. There are original songs by Joe Iconis, Drew Gasparini, and Pasek and Paul. If you don’t know who these fellas are, get to know them now.
3. Debra Messing is once again brought to your teleivsion screen. Debra. Messing. That in itself should make you turn on the TV.
4. It’s actually filmed in New York. Which is a beautiful thing.
5. It’s part drama – part comedy – part musical. And, if anything, it’ll take you away from your troubles for an hour. It reminds us of what television used to be like, before reality TV plagued the silver screen…there’s a STORY. There’s a PLOT. There’s A REAL FREAKIN’ MUSICAL THAT IS PERFORMED EVERY EPISODE.
6. Just like Glee, there are coversongs to several Top 40 Tunes, and, well, they’re brilliant. My particular favorites at the moment is the Billy Joel song, ‘Everybody Loves You Now‘, performed by Andy Mientus and Jennifer Hudson. It’s brilliant.
7. How do you not love to watch Angelica Houston and Jack Davenport? And yes, they’re gracious and funny and smart in real life. How do I know this? Because I was an extra onset this season! As an actress, a director, a writer, a theater educator, it was an awesome learning experience, and tons of fun.
8. It’s clear that Debra Messing, Christian Borle, Angelica Houston, Jack Davenport, Megan Hilty, and Katharine McPhee are allstars. BUT, Season Two newcombers Krysta Rodriguez, Jeremy Jordan, and Andy Mientus are all stage actors with Broadway and Off-Broadway credits. Krysta orginated the role of Wednesday Adams in The Adams Family on Broadway, Jeremy Jordan was nominated for a Tony Award in his performance in Newsies, and Andy was Stokes in the MCC Theater production of Carrie.
9. Debra Messing. Oh wait, did we say that already? Fine, we’ll say it again, DEBRA MESSING. There’s a reason she’s considered one of the greatest television actresses of our time…it’s because she’s awesome. Oh, and she’s an amazing person, both inside and out.
10. SMASH gives a voice, comfort, and hope to those who feel at home in a theater. It celebrates writers, lyricists, actors, singers, performers, friendships, loyalty, creativity, love, and art. But, in my opnion, the most important thing about this show is that it celebrates the achievement of dreams, and the road that one must to take to get there. Is that road easy? Absolutely not. But, it’s absolutely worth it.
