My Dearest Students,
You have off from school today because of a great American, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Take time to learn about him, learn from him, and honor his memory.
Watch the film Selma, and hear his story.
Read his story on the pages of Strength to Love.
Get to know him through the eyes and words of the woman who loved him most in My Life, My Love, My Legacy: Coretta Scott King.
Hear the speech that still rings true today.
Progress comes with understanding where we’ve come from, so we may know how far we have to go.
I often wonder what the world would be like if Dr. King was not taken from this earth so soon. Would we be kinder to one another? Would we live in harmony? Would race no longer be an issue?
Who knows. But what is known is that although we’ve come so far, there’s still left to go.
And that, my students, starts with a single step, or a single conversation.
Have a conversation with those who are different from you – talk with them, not at them. Today, everyone has a platform, most people have some sort of social media – and even though that gives us the opportunity to share our opinions, the art of conversation and genuine discourse is disappearing.
Let’s fix that.
Let’s talk.
Let’s be the dream that Dr. King envisioned. Let’s grab hands with those who wish to blaze a trail towards justice and goodness – and not let go.
We’re all in this together – and goodness and justice know not what melanin is – for the measure of a man or woman is how they treat those around them.
Happy Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day!
