Last night I watched A Star is Born.
I know, I know, I’m a little late to the party.
But…wow. Like, wow. Like, wow. It’s rare that a movie lives up to the craze and the hype. Usually when that happens, by the time I get around to seeing the movie I’m usually underwhelmed. This couldn’t be further from the truth for A Star is Born The short synopsis is this: A musician (Bradley Cooper) helps a young singer (Lady Gaga) find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral.
The big picture is so much bigger.
It’s a story about artistry, and humaity, and storytelling. It’s a story about love and life and the complexities of navigating them both. It’s a story about the transformative power of music, of believing in someone, and beliving in something bigger than yourself.
I was blown away by both Cooper and Gaga. To direct a movie like this, which was beautiful to watch, which made you feel for these character deep in your soul, is an extraordinary feat. And to star in it, too? Damn. Watching Bradley Cooper act in anything is always like taking a masterclass in acting, but there was something in this performance that was raw, vulnurable, and unlike anyhing I’ve ever seen him in. You wanted to crawl into the screen and give him a hug, and at the same time you wanted to give him a shake, too. Lady Gaga was magnificent. There was no “gaga-ness” about her. She dug into this role with grit, and grace, and seamless artistry. You felt her pain, her joy, her struggle – you felt it all.
Lastly, the entire sountrack is absolutely breathtaking. Download it now.
