I don’t remember the first time I read this book. I must have been 9 or 10, enthralled with the ethereal women who led young Meg on her journey and how powerful it felt as a young girl to see Meg care for her family. I kept the copy I read as a kid (though that’s no longer unusual), and when I saw the new trailer come out, I remembered that feeling.
I recently re-read A Wrinkle in Time, to make sure I remembered what happened before the film came out. I’m almost 30 now, and was still just as enthralled.
I finished the book in just over a day.If you haven’t ever read A Wrinkle in Time, it’s the story of Meg Murry, whose mother is a scientist, and whose father is missing, and the journey through the universe that she goes on with her friend Calvin and her youngest brother, Charles Wallace, to save her father. You’ll meet the Mrses – Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which, as well as other out of this world characters that both guide Meg on her journey and prevent her success along the way.You don’t need to be 9 or 10 to enjoy this book. Madeline L’Engle’s writing is imaginative and descriptive, and you fall deep into the story more quickly than you’ll expect. This story is powerful for young people, especially young women, but I loved reading it as an almost thirty-something. It reminded me of the strength I have within.
I’d encourage you to read the book soon, if you can. The film, directed by Ava DuVernay and starring Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling, Reese Witherspoon, and Storm Reid, comes out on March 9.
It’s going to be incredible.
