It’s July 5th.
Yesterday we celebrated Independence Day – and I cannot think of a currently running show that epitomizes the beauty, grace, and goodness that is the power of the American spirit better than Bandstand.
Bandstand is an original musical composed by Richard Oberacker with book and lyrics by Oberacker and Robert Taylor. The musical stars Corey Cott, Laura Osnes, and Beth Leavel, and tells the story of a group of veterans returning home to the United States after World War II.
I’m so in awe of the work that everyone did at Bandstand Broadway. From the vocals, to the acting, to the music and orchestrations, to the design, to the choreography, to the directing, to the way the entire cast moved as a cohesive unit, the FEARLESS and giving ensemble – it was truly awe inspiring. And the heart of this story, it’s palpable. It’s evident in the notes and the words, and in the little touches – like the Veterans Wall backstage, (pictured here). It’s a story that cares – a beautiful testament to love, to friendship, to music, to love of country, and our troops.
Bandstand on Broadway is now playing at the Bernard Jacobs Theatre – 242 West 45th Street. Tickets and additional information are available here.
