Hello Friends,
When I hear that word, I think of purity. Of White Lillies. Of the Grace & Goodness of people.
I think of love.
This play, well, it’s not quite like that.
Yes, there’s love. Yes there’s good people. But…GRACE on Broadway speaks more to those who fall from Grace. Lets say one does fall from Grace…THEN what happens?
Grace, written by Craig Wright and directed by Dexter Bullard, stars Paul Rudd, Michael Shannon, Kate Arrington, and Ed Asner.
Steve, (Paul Rudd) and Sara (Kate Arrington), are a young married couple, who move from Minnesota to Florida to open a chain of Gospel-themed hotels. Yes, that might sound like the perfect framework for a comedic setting, and while there are many funny moments, by no means is this play a comedy.
The young couple live next door to an agitated & scarred rocket scientist, Sam (Michael Shannon), who is dealing with a slew of problems, one of them being the death of his fiance.
So, lets recap. Sara is alone, no family, no friends, no job, and her husband, Sam, is constantly working, never home. And when he’s home he’s really not…home. But they’re soul mates. So she deals with it. But the loneliness, oh that’s a lot for a heart to take sometimes.
So she starts to talk to Sam. Sam. Sam who looks at her with love. Sam who talks about things other than “business”. So, what does one do when they are married & loyal, but their heart betrays them? How do you know when it’s lust? Or Love? Or Fate?
Time will tell for these three…
…and…
…the icing on the cake is the crotchety, old pest-control man, Karl, (Ed Asner), who has a deep-rooted history with religious fanatics. He provides us with insight, perspective, a tear or two, and a heartfelt laugh.
Oscar Wilde once said, “I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.”
That, my friends, is what happens when you go see Grace. You share the in their intimacy, their joy, and their heartache.
Pure. Bliss.
