All of us are more than one thing. – Leslie Odom Jr.
Good God.
Just when you think the Hamilton Musical phenomenon couldn’t get any better – it does.
Hamilton’s America, a PBS documentary about the making of Hamilton the Musical, and the life of Alexander Hamilton is….well, it’s outstanding.
It aired Friday, October 21st, and #HamildocPBS is the number one trend on twitter.
A documentary about American history and one of the greatest musicals of all time on PBS was the top thing people were talking about on social media.
Let that sink in for a minute.
Pretty amazing, eh?
Produced by Academy Award® and Emmy Award®-winning producers RadicalMedia (What Happened, Miss Simone?, Keith Richards: Under The Influence, In the Heights: Chasing Broadway Dreams for PBS) and directed by Alex Horwitz, Hamilton’s America digs deep into the creative process of birthing the show that is Hamilton the Musical.
You’ll see footage from backstage, from various monuments where the cast members got their research. You’ll see interviews with cast members, the “cabinet”, and Lin.
You’ll see a plethora of interviews with notable historians, political figures, and pioneers from the theatre community, including President Barack Obama, President George W. Bush. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Secretary Hank Paulson, Secretary Timothy Geithner, Questlove, Black Thought, Jimmy Fallon, John Weidman, Nas and Stephen Sondheim.
But more than what you see is what you’ll feel.
There’s a feeling of hope that will fill you throughout the film.
Hope for today, for tomorrow, for the future.
In today’s day and age, hope seems to be something we’re lacking. And I find that so very troubling, as hope is so powerful, beautiful, and needed.
But Hamilton is hope.
Out of the past, comes the dreams of our future.
Teachers across the country, I urge you to show this film to your students. It’s art. It’s literature. It’s history.
It’s pure poetry.
