My grandparents gave me the second Harry Potter book for Christmas when I was 12. I hadn’t yet read the first book, but I was so excited to open that gift. One, I now needed the first book and, two, I could finally join everyone I knew who was reading and loving Harry Potter.
I got hooked (didn’t we all?). I spent the next 8 years growing up with Harry, Ron, and Hermione. I cried when I finished the 7th book, and agin when I watched the final film.
So when I heard The Cursed Child was being printed, it was an incredible day. And I was not disappointed.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child begins where we leave off with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Harry, Ginny, Ron, and Hermione are sending their kids to Hogwarts. It’s Albus Severus’ first year, and he’s nervous about being sorted in to Slytherin. The story follow Albus as he experiences Hogwarts for the first time and tries to discover who he’s supposed to be in the shadow of his father.
The play is tumultuous and thrilling, and was probably the quickest Harry Potter story ever written. Jack Thorne does an incredible job of taking Rowling’s story and turning it into a play that seems to still have the same tone and feeling as all of Rowling’s stories. The play itself is a beautiful story of both finding oneself and learning how your life impacts the lives of others.
I don’t want to give too much away, dear readers, for it’s a story you have to sink your own teeth in to. All that’s left to say is this: if it’s a good Harry Potter story you’re looking for, we’ve found another one.
