Hi Beautiful People,
I’m going to keep this short & sweet.
Cause really, it’s not one of our typical reviews, but more of a commentary.
See, after YEARS, I finally saw Kinky Boots the other evening.
And it was special.
See, Andy Kelso was one of the first people who ever agreed to sit down and participate in an interview with The Write Teacher(s). As was Eric Leviton. And Ellyn Marie Marsh, well, she’s been supportive in more ways that I can adequately express.
So, it’s quite special when you get to see friends & collaborators & colleagues doing something special on The Great White Way.
It’s quite special, indeed.
By now, everyone knows what Kinky Boots is about.
But on the off-chance you don’t, here’s the official synopsis:
Inspired by true events, KINKY BOOTS tells the story of Charlie Price, who inherits his father’s shoe factory. Looking to save the family business, Charlie turns to a fabulously fashionable new friend — cabaret star Lola — who gives him an outrageous idea that could change both of their destinies.
Here’s the thing —
Could some say it’s a cheesy musical? Sure.
But do you leave the musical smiling? ABSOLUTELY.
And do we need to smile more? YES. Absolutely, yes.
But more importantly than glitz and glamour and cheese – is the notion that we, as people, should have faith in our fellow-man….
…That we shouldn’t be so quick to judge. That we should help out someone who is in need of assistance, support, and/or love.
The Al Hirschfeld Theatre seats 1,424 people.
Kinky Boots runs 8 shows a week, and, years after it has opened, it still packs a house — I mean, they’re touring in other CONTINENTS now.
So, if the house sells out for every show, each week, that’s 11,392 people who will see this show. And hear this message.
And if they take that with them for even FIVE MINUTES…well, that’s a whole lot of love that extends beyond the walls of the theatre.
A whole lot, indeed.
And with that in mind, I hope Kinky runs for a real long time.
Cause the world needs more smiles, more love, more compassion…and more red high heels.
