In the last six months, I’ve read both of Mackenzi Lee’s books. I’ve been enthralled by her writing and her characters, and I need everyone else to read what Lee has written as well.
Now is the perfect time to get started, too. Mackenzi Lee has two books coming out this year, and more in 2019. This girl is on fire.
The first book of hers that I read was The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue. This book is the story of Henry “Monty” Montague and his Grand Tour of Europe. Set in the 1700s, Monty and his best friend Percy travel Europe with Monty’s younger sister Felicity, and the three of them get in to harrowing adventures and learn about themselves and each other along the way. It’s fun and exciting and a true thrill ride.
After finishing this book, I found Mackenzi Lee on Twitter and discovered that Lee’s love of history led her to the creation of the hashtag #BygoneBadassBroads, which highlights women who have done incredible things in history. Badass women, a little history, and Lee’s powerful writing makes for a great read, even on a hashtag.
Through this hashtag I discovered Lee’s passion for the story of Mary Shelley, and that Lee had written a retelling of Frankenstein. Recently, I finally picked up a copy.
This Monstrous Thing is set in 1818 Geneva and centers around Alasdair Finch and his life as a Shadow Boy – a clock mechanic who cares for men built with clockwork parts. Alasdair’s brother Oliver died, though not for long, as Alasdair knows exactly how to make someone function with clock parts. But when Frankenstein is published, Alasdair’s life changes dramatically, and suddenly Oliver might be the only one that can save him.
I’ve truly fallen in love with Mackenzi Lee’s writing, and I’m most excited for what comes next. First, #BygoneBadassBroads is being turned in to a book, published at the end of this month. And then later this year, Monty, Percy, and Felicity’s story continues with The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy, told from Felicity’s point of view.
Now is the perfect time for you to start reading Mackenzi Lee. Which one will you pick up first?
