Hey Friends!
Another Netflix original has taken the world by storm. I have been completely geeking out about House of Cards, as I’m sure some of you have as well. Arguably, Kevin Spacey is trying to take over the world with this new series that he produces and stars in.
When I watched the first season last year, I was skeptical. It’s about the American government, a topic that I can rarely wrap my head around. Being from another country definitely does not help with understanding a government, especially when it is not my own. And, I’ll be honest, politics is not a topic that interests me, at the dinner table or not.
Season 2 of House of Cards is action packed, full of sex, death, ladder climbing, and… did we mention sex? They really took some liberties here, but it proves to engage an audience with over six million views, taking about 15% of Netflix’s viewers. In comparison to it’s 2% outreach last year, the season has made a huge improvement.
As usual, Kevin Spacey is impeccable. His performance is near flawless, complete with asides to his audience, as he did in Season 2. The one difference between season 1 and season 2, is that in season 2 his motives are clear, whereas in season 1 there is a time where we are not sure of his goal (to become Vice President).
One of the best additions to the cast, in my opinion, was Molly Parker, who plays the new Majority Whip, Jackie Sharp. Sharp is exactly what her name describes; sharp. She is not afraid to stir up some turmoil, just like Frank Underwood. Jackie Sharp has the potential to really ruin Frank, making the scenes with her incredibly suspenseful.
I give this baby four stars. Not five, but four. Arguably, the amount of sex scenes in this season is a little overwhelming and maybe a little unnecessary in driving the plot. But from the moment I started watching, it was all I thought about. I watched House of Cards in maybe four sittings (it really could be done in a full day if one tried). I urge you all to do the same. And if you have not seen season 1, do that before watching season 2, as it puts a lot of things into context and will help you to become even more engaged in Frank Underwood’s journey.
