Hello Beautiful People,
Last night, The Write Teacher(s), along with many of our friends & fans, watched the two hour season premier of SMASH.
And you know what?
Ratings and numbers be damned…it. Was. A. Smash.
It warms our heart & lifts our spirit when we see…I don’t know, a show on a network with a SCRIPT.
In the days of reality television mania, this, dear friends, is a beautiful thing.
And these are the shows that we champion for, the ones that we will write about, the ones that we will watch…(the ones with a script).
Not only does SMASH have a script, but it has SONGS. Songs that will work there way into your heart & your head…songs that you’ll be playing on repeat for weeks and months to come. The Season Two premiere showcased a song written by the ever so talented Mr. Joe Iconis, and performed by the Tony Award nominated dynamo, Jeremy Jordan…Broadway Here I Come.
I truly do not think that you have to be a “theater” person to enjoy this song; if you listen to the lyrics, it’s about so much more than wanting to be a star. It’s about frustration combined with determination sprinkled with tidbits of fear of failure…I mean, who HASN’T felt that way?
What’s beautiful about this season, is that the producers are introducing characters who have actually been on Broadway. They’ve been to the early calls, the cattle calls, the rehearsals that seemed to go on for ages. They’ve worked long and hard for those Equity cards, they have dealt with the sore muscles and the aching feet, the moments when a show closes and you’re not quite sure where your next paycheck has come from.
They’ve lived it.
And now, they’re playing it on television, and itsn’t that the BEST sort of reality?
Is SMASH a perfect replica of what goes on in the theatre district of the Big Apple? No.
Is Glee an accurate representation of what goes on in theatre classrooms in high schools? No.
Should this MATTER when we’re wathcing TV? No.
I mean, I don’t know about you, but when I go to the theatre, when I sit down in front of my television, when I take the time to see a movie in an actual cinema, I’d like to forget about my daily tasks, duties, responsiblities. I’d like to check my worries and fears and problems at the door when I push play…don’t you?
To the newcomers, Krysta Rodriguez, Andy Meintus, and Jeremy Jordan…y’all done good last night. Real good.
But alas, here at The Write Teacher(s), we were rooting for you all. We preach hope over hate. Good over evil. Light always pierces through the darkness.
To our Write Teacher(s) readers & friends, we will be watching the next episode of SMASH on February 19th, and we sure hope you will too.
