Dear Bookworms,
A few months ago, I decided to join the Book of the Month Club. I ordered the first month because it came with an extra book for no additional charge, and if you know anything about me, you know that I’ll do just about anything for a free book.
Life got away from me, and I just now got around to reading that extra book. And let me tell you what – I’m so glad I did.
The Grownup by Gillian Flynn is a short story that was originally entitled “What Do You Do?” when it was published in George R. R. Martin’s Rogues anthology. While the small hardback copy is just over 60 pages, it reads and sucks you in like one of Flynn’s several hundred page thrillers. The narrator is a young woman who “reads auras,” and gets drawn in to the home of a woman who appears to have a very disturbed stepson. Flynn, as usual, draws you in to one version of the story and then twists the perspective, causing the word “WHAT?!” to fall loudly from your lips.
Gillian Flynn is always a must read for me, ever since Gone Girl shook me to the core. I highly encourage you to pick up your own copy of The Grownup. Maybe don’t read it after dark.
