The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman was one of the books picked for our June Bookshelf. Goodreads offers the following description:
Irene is a professional spy for the mysterious Library, which harvests fiction from different realities. And along with her enigmatic assistant Kai, she’s posted to an alternative London. Their mission – to retrieve a dangerous book. But when they arrive, it’s already been stolen. London’s underground factions seem prepared to fight to the very death to find her book.
Adding to the jeopardy, this world is chaos-infested – the laws of nature bent to allow supernatural creatures and unpredictable magic. Irene’s new assistant is also hiding secrets of his own.
Soon, she’s up to her eyebrows in a heady mix of danger, clues and secret societies. Yet failure is not an option – the nature of reality itself is at stake.
As someone who is not overly enthusiastic about fantasy novels, I cautiously put this novel on the June Bookshelf. The idea of a library that has access to multiple realities is fascinating and I read the book expecting to be mesmerized by a world where anything is possible.
Odd as this may seem, I finished the book without a strong opinion. For me, the book was not a page-turner. I found myself casually making my way through the chapters instead of devouring them. The book is well written and the story was fairly interesting, but the world Cogman created did not live up to my expectations. This does not mean the book was not good, it just means it wasn’t the book for me. I don’t love fantasy, so when I read the genre, I am hard to please.
If you enjoy fantasy and you love books, I recommend giving it a try. Cogman will be releasing two more books in this series:
- The Masked City (09/06/16)
- The Burning Page (01/10/17)
