Hello Beautiful People,
The Realistic Joneses.
Say it with me.
Breathe it in.
Cause it’s quite possibly one of the greatest pieces of theater I’ve seen in quite some time.
The Realistic Joneses was written by Will Eno, directed by Sam Gold, and has a cast that will absolutely have you riveted to your seats the entire 90 minutes – Academy Award nominee Toni Collette (Muriel’s Wedding, Hostages), Golden Globe winner Michael C. Hall (Dexter, Six Feet Under), Tony Award winner Tracy Letts (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Homeland) and Academy Award Winner Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny, The Wrestler).
It’s about love. It’s about life. It’s about neighbors.
It’s about secrets. It’s about dreams. It’s about those private moments when we find ourselves alone, even in amidst company.
The little nuances of life, that’s what The Realistic Joneses is about – and it’s one of the best 90 minutes I’ve ever spent in a theater. I for one, wasn’t sure what to expect, I mean, with the exception of Tracy Letts, this cast was very…Hollywood. Now, don’t get me wrong, each and every one of these actors are people I admire and respect. But, I wasn’t sure how their talents were going to translate onto the stage.
Oh, well, shame on me for even thinking that they would be anything but phenomenal. Watching Toni Collette, Michael C. Hall, Tracy Letts, and Marisa Tomei in The Realistic Joneses is the equivalent of watching a masterclass in acting. They are funny, poingant, quick, and real. They establish characters with heart and quirks and that certain je ne sais quoi that will remind you of your own neighbor. Your Lover. Maybe even your best friend.
The entire ensemble works as a well-oiled machine, due in part to their superb acting chops, and the finesse of director Sam Gold.
I could gush about this play for quite some time.
But really, what you should know, is that it is worth your time, worth every penny, and one of the most innovative shows this season. So head on down to the Lyceum to see The Realistic Joneses, and, afterwards, make sure to stop by the Lantern’s Keep for a post show cocktail.
