Hello Beautiful People,
The Write Teacher(s) Team and myself are SUPER busy this season. Which is amazing. And what’s even more amazing is when we have Guest Writers come in and review the countless shows that we’re so honored to be invited to. So, allow me to introduce you to Jesse James Keitel, the author of this fantastic review of this MUST see show, Under My Skin.
I had the pleasure of watching a uniquely smart, funny, and politically charged, sitcom-styled play the other night; “Under My Skin”–conveniently written by Robert Sternin and Prudence Fraser, the writers of “The Nanny” and “Who’s The Boss?”
The story challenges gender norms, faith, sexuality, and the importance of learning to understand and relate to others. It triumphantly criticized the American healthcare system with a flawless, witty pizazz that time and time again left me expecting a laugh track, but instead left me charmed with laughter of my own while simultaneously thinking about larger national issues. The play was filled with clever and heartfelt insights into the daily lives of our peers and their families, which made me, as an audience member, truly wish the best for the characters onstage.
Starring Kerry Butler as Melody Dent and Matt Walton as Harrison Badish III, the cast is a wonderfully receptive ensemble of actors; each and every one of them had multiple “stand out” moments that made the show enjoyable from start to finish. It is a fun-filled show that would make a great first-time play-goer excited for more just as much as a seasoned audience member.
Light-hearted and fun, but strongly political and intelligent, Kirsten Sanderson’s production of “Under My Skin” playing at The Little Shubert Theater is exciting, thought-provoking, and an all around good time.
