Hello Beautiful People,
I grew up in New York.
I grew up in the theater.
I’ve seen more shows than I care to count.
I’ve slept in the back rows of theaters where the light doesn’t quite reach…just to get a nap in. For fifteen minutes. When I was ten. And then fifteen. And then twenty-five…and then, well, lets stop counting.
I grew up in the theater…
…and I’ve never heard and/or experienced anything like 35mm until this past Monday.
Like, never.
Ryan Scott Oliver writes in a way that permeates. He permeates your brain, your heart, your soul – when you come out of a RSO event, you’re humming his tunes for the rest of the evening, for the rest of the week, hell, it just becomes part of who you are. The music of Ryan Scott Oliver gets under your skin, and trust me when I say, I mean that in the BEST way possible.
This what the internet will tell you about 35MM:
35MM, a multimedia “musical exhibition” in which photographic images, by Oliver in collaboration with photographer Matthew Murphy, inspire music and lyrics, and inversely music and lyrics inspire photographs, is preserved as an original cast recording by the Ghostlight label. A full developmental production was presented at Urban Stages in December 2010, directed by Daisy Prince. 35MM made its Off-Broadway World Premiere at the Galapagos Art Space in New York City on March 7, 2012. Due to popular demand, the show was extended and sold out its run. 35MMis currently being licensed and has received productions in Baltimore, MD, Dayton, OH, and will open in London and Canada in 2013.
This is what I’ll say about 35MM:
It ignites the spirit . The music, the photographs, the acting, the singing – the whole package can make the most dormant spirit feel alive. Aw hell, it will make the most dormant spirit feel alive. And isn’t that what great art is all about? To ignite the spirit? To engage everyone? To spark imagination?
35MM does all of that, and then some.
My favorite songs?
Well, it’s hard to pick….
…but, if I HAD to, I’d say On Monday, Make Me Happy, Hemming and Hawing...I mean, do I really have to pick just one? Cause the thing is, there’s something for everyone. For every mood. For every feeling. For every man. For every woman. 35MM has this uncanny ability to reach a wide range of audiences, something that is not exactly easy to do as of late.
And it’s awesome.
And guess what – DARLING will be just as amazing. On November 4th. At 54 Below. Check it out by clicking here.
