Hello Beautiful People,
This past Monday I once again found myself at Broadway’s Supper Club – for an evening with Nat Zegree.
Now for those of you who are avid Write Teacher(s) Readers, the name might sound familiar to you. Nat Zegree was previously seen on the 54 Below stage in Carner and Gregor’s Barely Legal Cabaret, and yes, he was also the Music Director for Lucky Disaster Volume 4.
While I had no doubt in his piano playing skills – (he’s brilliant), I was curious to see him perform own music come alive on the 54 Below stage.
Nat was be joined on stage by Jessica Vosk (Bridges of Madison County), Ali Ewoldt (Les Miserables), Ray Lee (Honeymoon in Vegas), Johnathan Shew (Wicked), Chloe Williamson (50 Shades: The Musical), and more. The evening was directed by Kenneth Ferrone (Smash, Sistas, Love Letters), and, among other selections, featured songs from the two musicals he’s working on with collaborator Eric Holmes (Smash).
Staying true to form, Nat did not disappoint, as his talent and brilliance reflected in every nuance of this show. While his music is often met with belly laughs, it is equally as thoughtprovoking, finding gentle moments that flawlessly fuse words and sound.
At the risk of sounding redundant, I’ll say it again – the music was fresh, lively, and poignant, and I truly enjoyed each and every song. But, my own personal favorites were the selections from Dr. Kilgore, (one of the musicals he’s writing with Eric Holmes), and, what I will forever call Nat’s Signature Song.
To put it plainly, the Sig Song reminds you of the beauty in the everyday. It urges you to take a glass half full mentality, no matter how bleak and dark things may seem. It reminds its listeners to find moments of joy – and nowadays, I just wish we celebrated that sentiment a little bit more.
