Hello Beautiful People,
Happy. {V-Day}!
Today is the official day of ONE BILLION RISING, the largest day of action in the history of V-Day, the global activist movement to end violence against women and girls.
“When we started V-Day 14 years ago, we had the outrageous idea that we could end violence against women,” said Ensler. “Now, we are both stunned and thrilled to see that this global action is truly escalating and gaining force, with union workers, parliament members, celebrities, and women of all backgrounds coming forward to join the campaign. When we come together on February 14, 2013 to demand an end to violence against women and girls it will be a truly global voice that will rise up.”
ONE BILLION RISING began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. The Vagina Monologues Return to HERE will join activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, and women and men across the world as we express our outrage, demand change, strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women.
What is The Vagina Monologues Return to HERE, you ask?
It is a production of The Vagina Monolgues at the original place this world-changing piece was workshopped, HERE, in downtown Manhattan.
It is, theater history.
Monumental.
Phenomenal.
I’m so blessed to be part of it all.
Another fun fact? You might have read Patrick Healy’s recent article in the New York Times: “Staging a Sisterhood“. Women in theatre is a hot topic today. This production was directed by a woman, Andrea Bertola. The entire production team is all women, as is the cast! The cast even includes Lorca Peress, (co-president of the League of Professional Theatre Women) and Shellen Lubin (Co-President of Women in Arts and Media Coalition). Big names in the world of women in theater.
It’s such an important cause, raising awareness about One Billion Rising and the 15th Anniversary of V-Day! Eve Ensler said, “This may be one of the only times that a theater production has really been able to serve a social movement to this degree, particularly economically.”
So, come see: Rachel Brill, Rebekah Wilson, Shellen Lubin, Lorca Peress, Justine Beirne, Darlene Heller, Lindsay Bracco, Billie James Vogel, Tzahalla Kessari, Lillian Rodriguez, Richarda Abrams, Frances McGarry Katie Perpall, Jessica Stewart, Alice Christy, Jacelyn Lisette onstage. Come support the creative talents of: Andrea Bertola, Director, Carly Knight, Assistant Director, Michelle Wilson, Assistant Director, Sue Dubrovich, Assistant to the Producer, and Amanda Rothman, Stage Manager. Come see what I, Megan Minutillo, and The Write Teacher(s) Team have been writing & tweeting about.
I could gush for days about this. I could gush, and type, and talk, and preach. I could tell you how amazing the entire cast is, how truly passionate and dedicated Andrea Bertola is, how unbelievably electric it is to be working in a space like HERE.
I could tell you about my own personal attachment to the cause….
I could tell you about stories of violence that have happened to one too many women that I know….
I could tell you about the women I know, who have their hearts rooted to this movement, rooted in something so deep and strong, something that I am not able to adequately express in print or confine to a phrase…
…for it is bigger than words. It is a feeling. It is a desire. It is, without a doubt, a movement. A call to action, a call to rise UP.
So instead, I’ll tell you this:
