Hello Beautiful People,
Forgive me, as the #AskATeach column has been lacking these past few weeks. It was intended to be a column of advice for teachers, parents, and students. A place for the education community to shed some light on the education related stories that wound up on the news. And yet, we’ve dropped the ball the past couple of weeks. For as my fellow teachers know, the end of the school year gets a bit crazy. Chaotic. Intense.
But, we’re learning.
And we’re growing.
And at the start of the next school year, the #AskATeach column will be back in full force. (Because hey, right now, school’s about to be out for summer!)
But, I’ll leave you with these thoughts, as the end of the year shenanigans ensue…
This had been a bit of a rough year. I just felt like my students weren’t getting…it. I felt like my words and lessons and teachings were falling on deaf years. I felt like I was beating my head against a brick wall.
And then one of my students showed me the speech he had written for graduation.
And it ended with him thanking me, for everything I had done for my classes this year. That had it not been for me, he might not have stayed in school at all. That had it not been for me, he would not be going to college.
Well.
Kids do say the darndest things, and surprise you when you least expect it – clearly my words did not fall on deaf ears. Not only did my student hear my words, they stuck.
And yes, it’s only one student. And I’m sure there are plenty who didn’t listen to a thing I said.
But what I’m trying to tell you, dear teacher friends, sometimes, all you need is that one. One student who listens. One student whose life you will change. One student who will take the building blocks that you have given, and create a city of the greatest heights.
Sometimes, all you need is one.
Happy Summer, y’all!
