FEINSTEIN’S/54 BELOW, Broadway’s Supper Club, presents Devin Ilaw, Dorcas Leung, and Charlotte Maltby in 54 Sings 1776 on July 3 and July 4, 2018. The Fourth of July meets Broadway in the fifth annual concert staging of the beloved musical, 1776, at Feinstein’s/54 Below. Showcase your patriotism with some of stage’s brightest stars singing numbers such as “Sit Down, John,” “He Plays The Violin,” “Molasses To Rum,” and more, as we celebrate the great sacrifices our friends, family, and founding fathers have made to shape our nation.
Feinstein’s/54 Below is delighted to wave the American flag proudly at this most beloved Broadway score as some of New York’s most exciting voices proffer these uniquely American tunes. Join Abigail Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Martha Jefferson, and John Adams as they descend upon the stage for what promises to be the perfect theatrical fit for the Fourth of July.
The cast for both nights includes Devin Ilaw (Miss Saigon, Les Misérables) as John Adams, Dorcas Leung (Hamilton National Tour, Miss Saigon) as Abigail Adams, Charlotte Maltby (The Sound of Music National Tour) as Edward Rutledge, Allison Bailey (Wicked National Tour, 54 Sings Heathers) as Martha Jefferson, Hassan Nazari-Robati (Beauty and the Beast National Tour) as Benjamin Franklin, Sandra Okuboyejo (Ragtime) as The Courier, Noah Plomgren (Finding Neverland National Tour, Hair National Tour) as Thomas Jefferson, James Seol (KPOP – Lucille Lortel Nomination for Best Actor in a Musical) as Richard Henry Lee, and Darius Wright (Pretty Woman, A Bronx Tale) as John Dickinson. In the ensemble, Adam Flynn Emery (Os Ensemble, Camille Claudele), Jordan Jacobs (CityRep’s Peter and the Starcatcher), and Chris Murphy (54 Sings Heathers, Naked Boys Singing!) complete casting.
The concert’s 2017 creative team reunites for this production’s fifth installment. Geraldine Anello (Finian’s Rainbow at the Irish Repertory Theatre) provides musical direction. Matt Redmond (Mamma Mia! and Aida at The MUNY) directs. Amy Sapp (54 Sings Heathers, Late Night Programming) produces.
Redmond shares, “It was important to assemble a cast of incredibly different people to tell the story in a way that still makes sense. Having females sing ‘Molasses to Rum’ and ‘Mama Look Sharp’ gives us a completely new outlook into these lyrics and helps us view these characters in new lights.”
Adds Sapp, “There’s no better time than the present to see a production of 1776. We hope our concert staging sparks joy in audiences while also creating a place for deeper conversations this Fourth of July.”
