The critically acclaimed play, Stalking the Bogeyman will get its UK debut beginning July 13 and will run through August 6, 2016 at The Southwark Playhouse.
Based on an extraordinary true story, Stalking the Bogeyman follows journalist David Holthouse’s secret plot to murder the man who raped him when he was seven years old. The play is based on an article published in 2004 by Holthouse and later featured on the US radio program ‘This American Life.’ The NY Times Critic’s Pick was adapted for the stage by Markus Potter and David Holthouse with additional writing by Shane Zeigler, Santino Fontana, and Shane Stokes, and has been called “A brave exploration of a subject that is taboo and that, in itself, is commendable and thrilling.’ -New Yorker. “A direct, intense story that maintains a powerful grip for its entire 90 minutes.” – The Bergen Record, “Impressive, couldn’t be more moving.” – Huffington Post, “A dynamic play of sobering substance. Highly recommended. Don’t miss it.” – New York Observer. ” “Compelling. Still thinking about it 24 hours later” Neil Genzlinger, The New York Times.
“What sets this play apart from others is that it pulls no punches as to what child abuse is…and illustrates the reasons so many victims never speak out. But it also concludes with a proposition that many will find challenging. Did the Bogeyman really only strike once?’’ NAPAC’s (National Association for People Abused in Childhood and Production Partner), Peter Saunders.
“I am honored to bring this inspiring story to the UK and propel these issues to the forefront of our discussion. David Holthouse is a true American hero who rips his scabs off time and again to help people heal. It’s an honor to tell his thrilling story about ending the conspiracy of silence.” adaptor/director, Markus Potter.
David Holthouse’s best-known work has been published in alternative weekly newspapers including: the Chicago Reader, Denver Westword, Miami New Times and Phoenix New Times. He’s the winner of numerous journalism and literary non-fiction writing awards, and was senior writer, editor for the Southern Poverty Law Center team that in 2007 won the Utne Reader Independent Press Award for its work exposing right-wing extremism in the U.S. and Europe, and the critically acclaimed Precinct Seven Five documentary about police corruption in Brooklyn in the 1980s.
