WHAT: Take Me To The River, an award-winning film by producer/director Martin Shore that celebrates the musical influence of Memphis in the face of pervasive discrimination and segregation, is celebrating the launch of its Take Me To The River Education Initiative on Thu., Feb. 12, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. at the world famous Apollo Theater in Harlem, N.Y., with a star-studded musical evening. The event is open to the public and tickets are available for purchase here.
The Take Me to the River Education Initiative is an educational course with instructional materials created in partnership with Berklee College of Music’s Berklee City Music program, and is based off of Shore’s feature, award-winning documentary film. Released in February 2015 in celebration of Black History Month and beyond, the Initiative brings standards-based instruction materials centered around the film and its music to educators nationwide free of charge. Performers at the event on February 12 include STAX legend William Bell; Grammy Award nominees Otis Clay and Bobby Rush; legendary house band Hi Rhythm Section; Ben Cauley & The Royal Memphis Horns; Academy Award winner Frayser Boy; Critics Choice Award winner Al Kapone; Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads; and more. The night will also feature the worldwide premiere of a New York City youth choir performing a newly commissioned arrangement of the classic gospel song, “Wish I Had Answered,” as well as performances by ensembles from Amp Up NYC and STAX Music Academy.
