Hello Readers,
In Dream Things True (one of our September picks) Marie Marquardt crafted a beautiful story while simultaneously highlighting an issue that has been contentious for years and one that the media is constantly discussing as the 2016 presidential primaries take place: immigration.
The story is a teenage love story. Two people from two different worlds fall in love and they have to face the challenges that each world presents. Evan comes from a world of privilege with fickle friends and little to no family support while Alma comes from a world where family is everything, but most of them are in the country illegally.
Although I don’t necessarily agree with some of the policy prescriptions Marquardt hints at in the novel, I love that she emphasizes the moral arguments in the immigration debate.
This book was not chosen because it was political, but current immigration law is the motif of the novel and cannot be ignored. If you enjoy young adult fiction, I recommend this book and hope it is not only enjoyable, but thought provoking.
