Carlos Acosta’s Carmen makes its world premiere in theaters around the world on Thursday November 12th as part of a dramatic mixed program of four short works. This is the first time the Royal Opera House is broadcasting a Royal Ballet mixed program live.
Join The Royal Ballet as it celebrates the 17-year career of its dynamic Cuban Principal Guest Artist Carlos Acosta. He brings his Latin flair both as choreographer and performer to an exciting new production of the Spanish classic Carmen, a tale of jealously and desire. Acosta himself will dance the role of Don José with Royal Ballet Principals Marianela Nuñez and Federico Bonelli as Carmen and Escamillo.
This compelling take on Bizet’s famous opera comes to life in striking minimalist designs by Tim Hatley and a sizzling adaptation of Bizet’s famous score by Martin Yates, with flamenco musicians and the Royal Opera Chorus adding to the passion of the evening.
The mixed program begins with Artist in Residence of The Royal Ballet Liam Scarlett’s acclaimed Viscera created in 2012. Sensual and energizing, Viscera is set to Liebermann’s First Piano Concerto and will be performed by Principals Laura Morera, Marianela Nuñez and First Soloist Ryoichi Hirano.
Jerome Robbins’s Afternoon of a Faun is one of the choreographer’s most enduring ballets. Inspired by the dancers Robbins saw rehearsing around him, the piece is a portrait of two ballet dancers in a practice studio absorbed by their reflections and the attraction they feel to each other. Set to Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, the atmospheric ballet will be danced by Principals Sarah Lamb and Vadim Muntagirov.
George Balanchine created the ten-minute Tchaikovsky pas de deux in 1960 inspired by a newly-discovered fragment of the 1877 Swan Lake score. Pushing the classical pas de deux to new extremes, this showpiece will be danced by Principal Steven McRae and Guest Principal Artist Iana Salenko.
