MERRY CHRISTMAS BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE!
On behalf of myself, and The Write Teacher(s) Team, I hope you and yours have a wonderful holiday.
And should you find yourself alone this season, we hope that joy and happiness fills your days real soon.
Today I leave you with a teachsperience piece that I wrote for I AM THAT GIRL.
I’m sitting here, thinking of what to say to you all.
What do you say when so much sadness is going on this world? What do you say when every time you turn on the television there’s another speech of hate, another person turning against his or her brothers and sisters? What do you write about when the world feels like it’s falling apart at the seams?
I don’t know.
I really don’t.
But, what I do know, and what my mama always taught me, was to focus on the good.
It’s been almost a week since I returned from Salt Lake City.
For the past month, I had the privilege of working on a new Christmas musical, It Happened One Christmas at the esteemed Pioneer Theatre Company.
When I first got the script of I was a little surprised to see the song “Seasons of Love” included. I mean, I LOVE RENT. Like, love, love, LOVE RENT. I know the whole show by heart. I saw it for my sixteenth birthday. I teach the importance of the musical when I’m in class. I adore the show.
But I didn’t understand how it fit in a Christmas musical.
I didn’t understand…until. Until we got into rehearsals, until I saw this beautiful cast onstage, until I sat there, in tech, day after day, and really listened to the lyrics.
Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Six hundred minutes
Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Journeys to plan
Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Six hundred minutes
How do you measure the life
Of a woman or a man
In truth that she learns
Or in times that he cried
In bridges he burned
Or the way that she dies
It’s time now to sing out
Tho the story never ends
Let’s celebrate
Remember a year in the life of friends
Remember the love
Remember the love
Remember the love
Measure in love
Seasons of love
Seasons of love
Measure in love. Measure in love. Measure in love. MEASURE IN LOVE. When you think about it, this was a perfect song for this show. Christmas, after all, is about love. That’s at the heart of the holiday, no matter how many people try to twist it into something else. And when push comes to shove, it’s not the money in your bank account, the number of degrees you have, it’s not about how many homes you own, or the car you drive, or how much power you have.
I can’t help but feel like if we let love guide us, we’d all be better off. I can’t help but feel like we’re missing the love lately.
It’s about love. Love is what binds us. Love should be what governs us. Love is the one thing we all can share, and I hope we can hold onto love during this crazy time in which we all live. Perhaps if we just show one person a little love and a little kindness each day, we’ll start to heal the wounds of the world.
So as you go through this Christmas season, and as you continue your days after December 25th, try to show your fellow sisters, (and brothers), some love. The world can never have enough smiles. Enough thank yous. Enough I love yous. The holidays can often be times of sadness for some; your tiny acts of love may make all the difference in the world of a stranger.
