Hello Friends,
There is a new student teacher at school.
She’s older than the typical student teacher, as she is married with four young children.
She is awesome.
She was telling us that her daughter just started Kindergarten this year, and that her little girl was upset because there is no finger-painting.
No. Finger. Painting.
That’s right, you really read that. No. Finger-painting.
Needless to say…I was horrified. I think we all were.
No more finger-painting? She continued to tell us that not only is there no FINGER PAINTING, but it was suggested that her child come to school for extra help. In September. FOR HANDWRITING. She’s in KINDERGARTEN.
This is worrisome.
Yes, STEM is important, (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), but why can’t we have STEAM?
Yes, the “A” counts for ARTS.
Is that so horrible?
As John F. Kennedy once said, “Aeschylus and Plato are remembered today long after the triumphs of Imperial Athens are gone. Dante outlived the ambitions of thirteenth century Florence. Goethe stands serenely above the politics of Germany, and I am certain that after the dust of centuries has passed over cities, we too will be remembered not for victories or defeats in battle or in politics, but for our contribution to the human spirit.”
Lets not kill our spirit, eh?
