Hey Friends!
I’ve been watching a lot of TV lately, particularly on my boyfriend’s Netflix account – Thanks Jesse! In particular, I’ve been caught up in the new original Netflix series, like the new series of Arrested Development and House of Cards.
Since their separation from their partnership with Starz they have been expanding their horizons as a production company. They have brought quality TV shows to an online forum, that could otherwise be brought to our television screens.
For example, Netflix saw how popular Arrested Development was, especially with their streaming capabilities, so they decided that they would produce the next series. There is some stipulation over whether or not they came to the production crew and team first, or whether the producers weren’t planning on making one and asked Netflix to swoop in and save the day.
Anyway, the point is Netflix is awesome. How about we make that a free service? Please? Everyone should be able to watch these shows. They are quality television.
I’m currently recovering from the event that was the season finale of Orange Is the New Black, so naturally I had to tell you all about it. Or at least give an overview of this amazing show, and at the same time try to not give it all completely away.
Orange is the New Black centers around Piper Chapman, played by Taylor Schilling (Argo, The Lucky One). Other noteworthy actors include Jason Biggs (American Pie series, Jersey Girl), who plays Piper’s fiance, Larry Biggs, Laura Pepron (That 70’s Show) Piper’s ex-girlfriend, and Kate Mulgrew (Warehouse 13) who plays Red, the chef at the prison Piper is placed at.
You could argue Piper is a little conflicted about how she is affected by her experiences in a women’s correctional facility. As a queer, or as the other prisoners like to specify a “lesbian,” she struggles with her feelings that she has for former drug dealing ex-girlfriend Alex, whilst maintaining her engagement with Larry. Her story proves that long distance relationships become infinitely different when one of the people involved is behind bars.
Perhaps some of the most thrilling and interesting stories come from Michelle Hurst, Uzo Aduba (Godspell 2011), Taryn Manning (Crossroads, Sons of Anarchy), and Dascha Palanco. These actresses play some of Piper’s inmates at the correctional facility. Michelle plays a woman who is feared by all the prisoners – no one messes with quiet, yet sinister, Miss Claudette. Uzo, whom you may have seen in the recent revival of Godpsell as the By My Side soloist, makes a notable appearance as Crazy Eyes, whom Piper comes to know as Suzanne. As her nickname suggests, she is a little crazy. Taryn Manning’s character, Pennsatucky, develops a religious following of prisoners – she believes she is a messenger of God. Her strong beliefs rub a lot of prisoners the wrong way, including Chapman. And last but not least, Daya, played by Dascha Palanco, who can’t keep her hands off attractive men, which continues to be true during her stay in the correctional facility.
Obviously I’m not going to reveal the big finish that ends the season, but, trust me when I say that you should catch up on anything that you have missed before Season 2 comes out! Believe me, guys, this one is not to be missed.
Enjoy your days!
