Continuing to add premiere names to their roster of participants at its Silver Anniversary Summit and Gala, CER today announced that Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló would keynote the gala dinner celebration on October 26.
“Given the seriousness of Puerto Rico’s educational challenges and the bold response he has led, Governor Rosselló is an extraordinary addition to our line-up of successful, entrepreneurs whose efforts are improving education opportunities and innovation for learners the world over,” said CEO and Founder Jeanne Allen.
In March 2018, the Governor led a bipartisan effort to enact a pathbreaking education law to address the destruction of education caused by Hurricane Maria, on top of years of poor-quality education. It provided for the creation of charter schools and scholarships for those trapped in failing schools to attend schools that better meet their needs, including private schools. The law also provided for the creation of a new island-wide bilingual curricular model that prioritizes subjects including math and science and decentralizes the Department of Education.
However, opponents led by U.S. teachers’ unions immediately sued to stop the reforms from occurring, and for months the efforts to transform education were stymied. This past August 2018, the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico ruled in favor of the law and the work was able to begin, including the opening of a charter school formed by the long-standing Boys and Girls Club there.
CER has provided guidance to the state’s leadership and civic groups about transforming Puerto Rico’s education offerings for students from K through Higher Ed. Governor Rossello’s participation will cap a day long Summit, the Road to Innovation for ONE America, featuring leaders from higher education, ed technology, K-12 innovators, and the business and investment community. The Honorary Chair of the Summit is Governor Jeb Bush, and co-chairs include Chris Whittle, Michael Moe and Kevin Chavous. The CER Gala will also feature the newly-crowned Miss America Nia Franklin, and six of CER’s Silver Honorees whose influence in education is unparalleled.
