“New Yorkers do not do subtle.” – Chapter 6
Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace by Becky Monson is one of those delightful little pieces of chick-lit that would make an adorable Hallmark movie.
In the first pages of the book, the reader meets Bridgette. She is a high-energy woman who thinks she is about to get engaged. When she shows up to dinner and her boyfriend ends the relationship, Bridgette feels like she’s been punched in the gut.
The story follows Bridgette as she tries to work things out with her ex-boyfriend and runs into another ex-boyfriend, one she never thought she would see again. The reader learns more about her relationship with each ex and by the end, as you can deduce from the title, Bridgette has to speak up for the man she thinks she ought to marry.
My favorite thing about this book was Bridgette’s first person narration. Here inner thoughts were hilarious. Here are a few of my favorites:
“That jaw. Damn.” – Chapter 4
“I see now that weddings are obviously designed by evil people to slap me in the face, and so I may boycott them altogether.” – Chapter 24
“How do I gently say via text that I would rather eat chili peppers on the hottest day of the year in the Sahara with no water, than go to his wedding?” – Chapter 25
“On the other hand, [I] am trying hard to stifle my what-the-hell face, because seriously. What the hell?” – Chapter 36
The story was light and cute, but read more like a movie script than anything else. The characters were one dimensional and kind of silly. Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace is the perfect book for someone who is looking for some light reading.
