Hello Beautiful People!
I cannot believe we’re nearing the end of this fantastic series. It truly is one of my favorite things we do at The Write Teacher(s), and, call me bias, but I feel like it just keeps getting better and better every year! But, this year was particularly special because of the involvement of my literary soul sister, my bookworm from another, the one and only – Sara M. Brink.
If you don’t know Sara’s writing, you best fix that right now. And if you haven’t checked out her virtual bookclub, Close Reads Cafe, I urge you to head on over there after you’ve read her blog.
Now, here’s a lil recap, about The 12 Days of Books, for those who are late to the parrrrrtay.
Each day, we’ll go through the following…
- TINSEL TITLE TIP. What does this mean? It’s just a suggestion for the perfect gift, stocking stuffer, holiday grab bag item…you get the idea.
- MERRY MEMORY LANE – Sara + I will suggest a childhood favorite, perfect for your little ones.
- GIVE IT BACK – For each day, we’ll highlight one charity that does a world of good. These organizations are the beautiful bits of humanity. They are the glow to your holiday sparkle. And we just love ‘em.
And so, without further ado, welcome to DAY ELEVEN! (And be sure to follow us on twitter, cause we’ll be hosting some gush worthy giveaways before Day 12 is up!)
Tinsel Title Tip, Day 11
We Are Water, by Wally Lamb. From the author who brought you She’s Come Undone, I Know This Much Is True, The Hour I First Believed, Wishin’ and Hopin’: A Christmas Story, comes a new work abotu love, betrayal, family, and marriage – We Are Water.
Here’s the official book blurb –
After twenty-seven years of marriage and three children, Annie Oh—wife, mother, and outsider artist—has fallen in love with Viveca, the Manhattan art dealer who orchestrated her professional success. Annie and Viveca plan to wed in the Oh family’s hometown of Three Rivers, Connecticut, where gay marriage has recently been legalized. But the impending wedding provokes some very mixed reactions and opens a Pandora’s box of toxic secrets—dark and painful truths that have festered below the surface of the Ohs’ lives.
We Are Water is an intricate and layered portrait of marriage, family, and the inexorable need for understanding and connection. Set in New England and New York during the first years of the Obama presidency, it is also a portrait of modern America, exploring issues of class, changing social mores, the legacy of racial violence, and the nature of creativity and art.
I know this will be under MY tree . A perfect gift for your favorite bookworm!
Merry Memory Lane, Day 11
Megan’s Pick – The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carl. I think Eric Carl is one of the greatest children’s authors around. Some of my earliest memories are reading his books – and I just thought The Very Hungry Caterpillar was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Even at a young age, I had a love of food! But, all kidding aside, his stories are delightful, his illustrations are the match that will light the imagination of every child!
Sara’s Pick – Matilda by Roald Dahl. Before there was Harry Potter, Roald Dahl infused plenty of magic into stories like James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. But I always related to Matilda, a girl who loved going to school and reading books. This story was one of the first lessons I had in standing up for what you believe in and staying true to yourself.
Give Back, Day 11
Happy Reading, Merry Christmas, & Happy Holidays!
