Tinsel Title Tip, Day 3 –
I think, in some former life, I lived in Mississippi. Or Georgia. Perhaps even Louisiana. Maybe it was Alabama. Who knows. But what I do know, is that I’ve always had a fascination with the deep south. The rich history. The cadence of the language. The way everything seems to move at a pace that’s just dripping with syrup and sweet tea. The hum and buzz of it all. I love it, which is part of the reason I’ve fallen in love with the words and stories of Joshilyn Jackson. Every. Single. Word. Book. Every little letter – I just scoop them all up and revel in her language, her characters, and the world that she has created within a mere hundreds of pages. So, this particular Tinsel Title Tip is Someone Else’s Love Story. This quite literally just hit the shelves – and everyone, everyone, everyone must get their hands on a copy.
Here’s the official book blurb, (cause even I haven’t read it yet – but I’m itching to get myself a copy.)
At twenty-one, Shandi Pierce is juggling finishing college, raising her delightful three-year-old genius son Natty, and keeping the peace between her eternally warring, long-divorced Catholic mother and Jewish father. She’s got enough complications without getting caught in the middle of a stick-up in a gas station mini-mart and falling in love with a great wall of a man named William Ashe, who willingly steps between the armed robber and her son.
Shandi doesn’t know that her blond god Thor has his own complications. When he looked down the barrel of that gun he believed it was destiny: It’s been one year to the day since a tragic act of physics shattered his universe. But William doesn’t define destiny the way other people do. A brilliant geneticist who believes in science and numbers, destiny to him is about choice.
Now, he and Shandi are about to meet their so-called destinies head on, in a funny, charming, and poignant novel about science and miracles, secrets and truths, faith and forgiveness,; about a virgin birth, a sacrifice, and a resurrection; about falling in love, and learning that things aren’t always what they seem—or what we hope they will be. It’s a novel about discovering what we want and ultimately finding what we need.
Bottom line is thus – I’ve never read anything by this woman that I haven’t absolutely adored. I imagine this will continue the tradition.
Merry Memory Lane, Day 3 –
Megan’s Pick – The Borrowers, written by Mary Norton and illustrated by Beth Krush and Joe Krush. Ok, maybe I had an invisible friend when I was little. Maybe. Or maybe I just had a very overactive imagination. Either way, this book is fantastic. I mean, how cool is the idea? “The Borrowers”, (who are really the Clock family), are tiny people who live underneath the kitchen floor of an old English country manor. Their belongings are bits and pieces of “real size” humans. Corks, postage stamps, thread, etc – these little things that we throw away so casually, or think nothing of, become staples for the Clock family. All is well until Pod is spotted upstairs by a human boy! WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? Well, you’ll have to read to find out.
Sara’s Pick – Where The Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein. One of the many ways I fell in love with poetry. With plenty of silly little couplets, Silverstein creates a world perfect for the imagination. He’ll make you want to rhyme everywhere you go. He’ll also slyly instill moral values within you at the same time.
