Hello Beautiful People!
A lil recap, about The 12 Days of Books, for those who are late to the parrrrrtay.
Each day, we’ll go through the following…
- TINSEL TITLE TIP. What does this mean? It’s just a suggestion for the perfect gift, stocking stuffer, holiday grab bag item…you get the idea.
- MERRY MEMORY LANE – Sara + I will suggest a childhood favorite, perfect for your little ones.
- GIVE IT BACK – For each day, we’ll highlight one charity that does a world of good. These organizations are the beautiful bits of humanity. They are the glow to your holiday sparkle. And we just love ‘em.
And so, without further ado, welcome to DAY EIGHT!
Tinsel Title Tip, Day 8
Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore, by Robin Sloan. The title alone makes me just giddy. As it is, I get lost in bookstores for hours. Days. I cannot even IMAGINE what it’d be like to have some literary oasis to run away to when insomnia strikes – it’d be phenomenal. Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore is part fantasy, part mystery, part tales of friendship, and part adventure. It starts examining the ways the world is changing and the ever-present battle/transition between new technology (electronic books) and the ways of yesterday (print books). The main character has been laid off from his job in Silicon Valley, and begins working at a dusty bookstore with very few customers, only to start discovering a slew of secrets. The mysterious old books, along with the store’s owner, lead to a 500-year-old secret society.
Merry Memory Lane, Day 8
Megan’s Pick – Samantha’s Surprise: A Christmas Story, written by Maxine Rose Schur, and illustrated by Robert Grace, and Nancy Niles. This children’s classic combined two of my greatest loves as a kid – Christmas + The American Girl doll phenomenon. It’s a feel good story, that makes you appreciate what you have, and reminds you what the spirit of Christmas is truly all about.
Sara’s Pick – Peter Pan, by J.M. Barrie. Who can’t relate to the boy who never wants to grow up? Peter Pan is a magical tale of childhood, innocence, and wonder. Whenever I read it, it makes me forget my worries and appreciate every moment of fun. It also reminds me that not everything is so serious and that no one needs to grow up too fast.
Give Back, Day 8
