One of the first reviews I read about The Girl in the Red Coat by Kate Hamer (one of our February Picks) promised the book would “recall the explosion” of similarly title books such as Gone Girl. I could not wait for the book to be released, as I was eager to dive into another page-turning psychological thriller.
The Girl in the Red Coat is about an eight-year-old girl named Carmel who gets separated from her mother, Beth, while attending an outdoor storytelling festival. The man who abducts Carmel claims to be her grandfather and informs her that her mother is dead. Her “grandfather” believes she has special healing powers and taker her visit many places and many people to “heal” people.
The story was interesting because the reader gets first person narration from both Carmel and Beth. The relationship between mother and daughter during a lengthy separation is fascinating and Hamer did a beautiful job developing it.
Although not what I expected, The Girl in the Red Coat proved to be an interesting story and unlike anything I have ever read before.
