Hello Beautiful People,
A note from our founder:
This weekend I had the privilege of seeing Inherit the Wind at Eastport South Manor Junior Senior High School. This was a show that was originally supposed to go up the weekend of November 4th. Due to the wrath of Hurricane Sandy, that did not happen. And when there was a nor’easter the following week, students, faculty, and the community wondered if this play would actually happen…
It did.
For those of you who don’t know, Inherit the Wind is a fictionalized account of the 1925 Scopes “Monkey” Trial, which resulted in John T. Scopes’s conviction for teaching Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution to a high school science class, which was illegal in Tennessee.
For those of you know, community members actually protested the fact that this show was being done at the high school. Grown men, in 2012, actually removed billboards that advertised the show.
Sad, isn’t it?
But, these students rose to the occasion. This was the little show that could, and despite slander and mother nature, they were able to have a successful run this past weekend.
I was able to see my former students shine under the lights, & serve such justice to the words of Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee.
Students who, as freshman, had trouble reading, were now in command of their words.
They understood action.
They understood meaning.
They flourished under the lights, & grew with each thunderous applause.
And that, my friends, is why I teach theatre.
XO
Megan
