“If there was one thing that defined adolescence it was hysterical laughter. You never laughed like that again. In adolescence the brutal realization that the world and life were completely absurd made you laugh until you couldn’t catch your breath, whereas later in life it would only result in a weary sigh.” – p. 60
The Red Notebook by Antoine Laurain (one of our June picks) is a treasure.
I have had The Red Notebook on my “To Read” list since it was published over a year ago. I must admit, I was captivated by the book’s cover. The cover features, a red notebook, the Eiffel Tower, and a cup of coffee – what’s not to like?
The story opens on a scarey note. The reader meets a woman named Laurent who is being mugged on the streets of Paris. Her attacker takes not only her wallet, but her handbag that held some of her most precious possessions. She is left roughed up and ends up in a hospital
When local bookseller Laurent Letellier finds the abandoned handbag, he knows it was not meant for the trash. He examines its contents in an attempt to find the name of the owner, but finds an intriguing red notebook instead. The short novel follows Laurent as he learns about Laure and tried to find her so that he might return the handbag to her.
The novel is short. The novel is sweet. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
