Paris seems to be one of those cities that appears on everyone’s bucket list. Images of the Eiffel Tower ignite the desire to travel in so many. Paris attracts people for different reasons. For some, it’s the art. For others, it’s the wine. For Kathleen Flinn, author of The Sharper Your Knife, The Less You Cry (one of our March Picks), it was the food.
Kathleen Flinn always loved cooking and dreamed of studying at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. In 2004, she found herself unemployed and in a perfect position to vacate London and enroll in culinary courses at Le Cordon Bleu.
The Sharper Your Knife, The Less You Cry is a detailed account of Flinn’s time in Paris. She studied at the school in 2004 and 2005 and kept a meticulous journal of over 600 pages about her time there. In each chapter, Flinn talks about a different series of lessons and the challenges they presented. The titles given to the chapters often gave a cheeky preview of what was to come in the following pages. For example, chapter 15 is called, “THE SILENCE OF THE LAMB. Lesson Highlights: Demonstration of Meat Cuts, Killing Lobsters, and the Link Between Death and Dinner.”
I enjoyed every page of Flinn’s memoir. I am not a chef, but I was fascinated by all of the lessons she outlined and am inspired to try some of the recipes she shared.
If Paris is a dream destination for you, this book will surely encourage you to book a trip immediately upon completion.
