Last year, I got in an argument with a family member about Transgender people, why it’s important to honor who they are, and how soon is “acceptable” for them to decide whether or not they are Transgender. It wasn’t a pretty discussion, and I let a lot of anger get in the way of helping them understand the gender spectrum.
I wish I had been able to show them “The Trans Literacy Project”.
“The Trans Literacy Project” is created and produced by Honest Accomplice Theatre, and is four episodes of “Trans 101” on YouTube (though it sounds like there are more coming!). Host Maybe Burke walks the audience through each episode, covering topics like the gender spectrum, labels that Transgender people use, gender expression and why it’s not okay to ask about surgery, and pronouns and how people use them to express their gender identity.
The writing of the show is well done, and offers the audience tangible examples that they can take with them to explain the gender spectrum and what it means to be Transgender to other people. For some people, understanding that there is a gender spectrum is easy, but for others it’s not, and “The Trans Literacy Project” does an incredible job at addressing some of the more difficult aspects of gender identity. The show is real, has both funny and serious moments, and is incredibly informative. Even if you consider yourself well-versed in the gender spectrum and/or what it means to be Transgender, this show is 100% worth the watch. I thought I was well-versed, but I definitely learned things.
Huge thanks to Honest Accomplice Theatre for putting this together, and to Maybe Burke, Maggie Keenan-Bolger, and Rachel Sullivan for doing an incredible job writing the show.
I can’t wait for the next episode!
