Hello Beautiful People,
A student of mine recently wrote a short play for a Special Education Awareness Night in her community.
She wrote a play about a deaf student, who is trying to find her way in her class full of hearing students.
My student also happens to have 60% hearing loss.
My student is never the first one to participate. She’s never the one to sit front row and center.
My student, well, she’s quiet.
She’s more likely to try and blend in than stand out.
And here she was, on Special Education Awareness Night, the playwright. And after her show was over, she came out and told the audience about her story. And then she taught the audience a bit of sign language.
And she glowed.
She shined.
She was brilliant.
So, I suppose the point of this little post is to congratulate my dear student. But it’s also to remind you all of the power of theatre and of arts education. It’s never about fame or fortune – it’s about connecting with other people. It’s about finding your own inner strength, it’s about letting your voice be heard.
