Hello Beautiful People,
This is not your typical post.
At least, I don’t think so.
It’s not a spotlight,
…it’s not a review,
…it’s just…some thoughts strung together.
Just last Monday, I went to the Highline Ballroom to see the concert of Drew Overcash, Blake Pfiel, and Zoe Sarnak. Full disclosure, it’s no secret that I adore Sarnak. Her music has heart, soul, and is rooted in something so deep and true – Zoe’s songs are an experience. A testament to the human spirit. She’s just awesome.
But alas, I digress.
I was going to see this concert, support my dear friend, and see these two new composers whom I knew nothing about.
Oh. My. Goodness.
What an evening. A wonderful, wonderful, wonderful evening. Drew Overcash and Blake Pfiel have got it going on. They have that certain je ne ce cois – a certain thing that I’m struggling to find the best words to represent. It’s…inexplicable. Hans Christian Anderson once said, “Where words fail, music speaks.” That, in a nutshell, is how I feel about the three composers/lyricists I heard at the Highline Ballroom last Monday.
They are poignant. They are deep. They are funny. They are sincere.
They give me hope for future generations. Their songs will restore any faith that has been shaken by the daily trials and tribulations of life.
Perhaps it’s my dear friend LoLo, who gave an amazing performance in her rendition of Zoe Sarnak’s, “If Your Child” who said it best, and I’m slightly paraphrasing here, loves, but it was something to the effect of, “the night was a perfect blend. The lineup of songs complimented one another, there was an expert balance of happy and sad, and everything clearly resonated with the audience.”
Drew Overcash, Blake Pfiel, and Zoe Sarnak – I am in awe of you three. Knowing you all makes me a better…artist. Teacher. Person.
And I would be remiss if I did not congratulate the amazing performers. So, oodles of congrats to Alice Ripley, Robin de Jesus, Richard H. Blake, Krystal Joy Brown, Nick Cartell, Laura Dreyfuss, Rebecca Faulkenberry, Jason Gotay, Emma Hunton, Corey Mach, Taylor Noble, Lauren Pritchard, Ryann Redmond, Preston Sadleir, Coleen Sexton, Kacie Sheik, Adrienne Warren, Grace Weber and the NYC acapella group BLACKOUT. And I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention the band, Bobbie L. Crow III on cello, Rick Ippolito on bass, Simon Kafka on guitar and Cody Rahn on percussion.
Music. Really amazing wonderful hit you in the guts and heart and head type of music is alive and well in NYC.
Familiarize yourself with Drew Overcash, Blake Pfiel, and Zoe Sarnak. They. Are. Unstoppable.
