Hello Beautiful People,
The Tony Awards are one week from today.
One. Week.
Eek!
I have had the pleasure and privilege of seeing (almost) all of the Tony Nominated shows this season and interviewing several of the nominees for our Q&A Series; many nominees have become people whom I’m blessed to call dear friends. I was going to write a little blurb about what it means to work on Broadway, whether it be onstage or backstage. I was going to write about the absolutely palpable love and energy that I experienced on the opening night of A Christmas Story, the sheer glee from Matilda, the poignant and moving experience that was ANN, LUCKY GUY, and Testament of Mary. I was going to write about how seeing Cinderella made me feel like I was five all over again, and the absolute magnificence that was Orphans.
I was going to write about what it feels like to wander around the streets of the Theater District. About the buzz of Schubert Alley. About the sweet flow of confections & conversations at Schmackary’s. About watching the crowd wait, without fail, for Tom Hanks, from the second floor at Sardi’s. I was going to write about the community. The friendship. The support. The love & admiration I have seen so many people, so many artists, give to one another this season.
I was going to write about the magic that exists when the lights go down in the house and come up on the stage. About the feel of the Playbill in your hand and the butterflies in your stomach when you sit in the seats and wait for your mind to expand, your heart to feel, and your universe to be rocked.
Because that’s what theater does.
It. Rocks. Your. World.
It is when imagination comes to life, it’s when the impossible becomes possible.
The Tony Awards is a celebration of what we all love. Nominee or not – it’s an exquisite time for all.
And Jordan Roth & Daryl Roth so beautifully put the feelings of wonderment into words here.
