KIMMY SCHMIDT.
The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, that is.
Goodness gracious, if you haven’t seen this Netflix wonder, to yourself a favor, and set aside some time to watch it, asap.
It’s absolutely delightful.
It’s absolutely ridiculous.
It’s absolutely delightful and ridiculous and still somehow manages to be poignant and thoughtful.
For those of you who are unfamiliar, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is a new American sitcom created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock.
The series centers around 29-year-old Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) as she adjusts to life in New York City after her rescue from a doomsday cult in Indiana, where she and three other women were held by Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne (Jon Hamm) for 15 years. Determined to be seen as something other than a victim and armed only with a positive attitude, Kimmy decides to restart her life by moving to New York City, where she immediately befriends her street-wise landlady Lillian Kaushtupper (Carol Kane), finds a roommate in struggling actor Titus Andromedon (Tituss Burgess), and gains a job as a nanny for the melancholy and out-of-touch socialite Jacqueline Voorhees (Jane Krakowski). With their help, Kimmy struggles to adapt to an unfamiliar world and jump-start the adult life that had been taken away from her.
It’s quirky. It’s silly. Sometimes it’s like a Lisa Frank store just threw up all over your television screen.
But once you get over the ridiculousness, you realize that there’s great heart. You realize that through her quirkiness and social faux pas, we’ve forgotten how to interact with one another. Care about one another. Listen to one another.
Kimmy Schmidt is a show that makes us want to step away from the streams of social media and glow of electronics, and get out an enjoy life with a little more gusto.
