Internship Descriptions:
Artistic Interns work closely with the Artistic staff, providing producing and administrative support for all Artistic and Workshop programming. Artistic Interns help to facilitate our Mondays @ 3 reading series; assist in the planning, budgeting, and coordinating of all departmental events; and participate in Friday morning Artistic staff meetings. Interns may also be asked to contribute to The Brief (NYTW’s online resource for further reading about our Season productions) and read scripts and attend performances on behalf of NYTW with other members of the artistic staff. The Artistic Internship is a wonderful opportunity for individuals interested in learning about how a non-profit theater functions through the lens of the artistic department. A strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple projects at once are essential. Enthusiasm for our various programs, passion for the artists we support and an interest in producing are highly encouraged.
Casting Interns work directly with our Casting Director to help coordinate and run auditions and maintain our casting databases. The Casting Intern communicates directly with agents, managers, and actors to arrange general auditions, EPAs, summer residency casting and auditions for workshops and Season productions. The Casting Intern assists with making appointments, preparing audition materials, and facilitating auditions. Strong communication and organization skills are required. Interns attend and help facilitate our Mondays @ 3 reading series and participate in Friday morning Artistic staff meetings. Previous casting experience is helpful and preferred, though not required. Casting interns volunteer a minimum of 4 days per week.
Education Interns work closely with the Director of Education, helping to facilitate and document Learning Workshop programs, such as in-school residencies, mentoring workshops, student matinees, and Mind the Gap Intergenerational Theatre Workshop. Education interns also coordinate the application and interview process for incoming interns, and contribute to The Brief, NYTW’s resource for further reading about our Season productions. Interns participate in Friday morning Artistic staff meetings and provide general administrative support to the Education department. Education Interns interested in teaching often have the opportunity to observe, assist, and lead in workshops taught at our partner schools, as well as participate in the lesson planning process with teaching artists. Applicants should have a strong attention to detail, ability to handle multiple projects at once and work independently, and a passion for working with people of all ages in the arts.
Engagement Interns work closely with the Artistic, Education, and Marketing departments to cultivate conversation around all New York Theatre Workshop productions. This intern will be in a unique position to work across three departments and will be a key member of the team working to build relationships between the theatre and audience members. Projects will include planning and implementing social media campaigns; contributing to and helping to manage The Brief, NYTW’s online resource for further reading about our Season productions; helping to curate and produce post-show panels and discussions; identifying potential community partners; creating lobby displays; participating in Friday morning Artistic staff meetings; and coordinating the application and registration process for NYTW Master Classes and Casebook. Applicants should have strong writing skills, attention to detail, the ability to work independently and in a group, the ability to handle multiple projects at once, and an interest in building a relationship between the theatre and an audience. Experience with InDesign or Photoshop is a plus, but not required.
Literary Interns work closely with the Literary Associate, engaging in dramaturgical conversations to identify work that is of interest to New York Theatre Workshop. Responsibilities include reading and evaluating scripts, attend readings and productions, scouting for emerging writers, and writing coverage reports; researching and providing dramaturgical support for current and upcoming seasons; maintaining the script database, managing and corresponding with script readers, and occasionally corresponding with artists and agents. Literary interns also contribute to The Brief, NYTW’s online resource for further reading; attend weekly Monday @ 3 readings; participate in Friday morning Artistic staff meetings; and provide administrative support as needed. Applicants should have a sense of NYTW’s aesthetic, a strong writing background, and an interest in literary management or producing. Dramaturgical experience is preferred. Candidates who are contacted for an interview may be asked to submit a writing sample.
