Kids Creative Spoken Word Artist @ PS 11
Kids Creative’s Spoken Word Program uses hip hop and poetry slams to investigate and address issues that are important to youth. Students will write, perform and film their own spoken word poetry. The program builds confidence, performance skills and promotes civic engagement through the creative process.
Primary Function: The primary role of the Spoken Word Instructor is to guide students through creating spoken-word performances consisting of storytelling or poetry. The teaching artist is welcomed to incorporate music, theater, and or dance into the performance
Site: PS 11, 320 West 21st Street.
Pay: $20-$25/DOE, Program runs once a week.

Job Responsibilities:
- Instruct and manage a group of approximately twenty (20) children in art classes (typically 45min-1 hour in length) that are developmentally appropriate.
- Lead students as they work together to learn and create spoken word based upon their ideas. Engage their imaginations and critical thinking skills to engage in a process that creates art work that helps translate their story for the stage.
- Prepare a performance each semester. This will be shared with parents and the school community.
- Create a semester outline and lesson plans that embody the goals of Kids Creative and its partners and share with Kids Creative Program Director.
- Collaborate with the Program Director to develop semester outlines and lesson plans
- Share material with Kids Creative each semester.
- Establish and promote Kids Creative’s “C” Values for community and peace building in the classroom.
- Communicate with parents regarding positive and negative behaviors of children.
- Attend staff meetings and bi-monthly staff professional developments.
Qualifications:
Qualified candidates must…
- Have at least a BA and 3 years experience working with youth in arts based programs.
- Have knowledge of a variety of artistic skills, mediums and cultures.
- Have a strong commitment to youth development and be familiar with common pedagogy in arts education
- Have experience creating and implementing lesson plans and collaborating with other teachers/artists
- Be able to commit to working the set time frame
- Be amiable to fingerprinting and security clearance by NYC Dept. of Education
- Display expertise in one or more arts and a love for the creative arts overall
- Be confident expressing themselves creatively in front of children and can inspire children with their constant creativity
- Be excellent team players and leaders, able to bring the best out of their co-workers
