“The creative process isn’t easy . . . It’s more like a wobbly, drunken journey down a very steep and scary hill, not knowing if there’s a sheer cliff at the end of it all. But it’s worth the journey, I promise.” (p. 143)
When I saw that Felicia Day was coming out with a memoir, I immediately added it to my “To Read” list. You’re Never Weird on the Internet (almost) (one of our August picks) was a delight. Felicia Day is an artist who has always kicked society’s expectations to the curb and embraced her uniqueness.
In her memoir, Day recounts the story of her rather non-traditional childhood and finds the beauty in the strangeness of her experiences. Perhaps my favorite thing about her childhood was her absolute obsession with Anne of Green Gables:
“My fandom about the Green Gables series was serious business. I prayed every night for my eyes to turn greener. I planned on naming my children Anne and Gilbert, which could have been awkward, seeing as they were married in the books. I put on my life’s bucket list: ‘Move to Canada because Prince Edward Island is certainly the most WONDEROUS place on the planet.’ I daydreamed about BEING Anne. Traipsing through nineteenth-century meadows, reciting Romantic poetry.” (p. 127)
Anne of Green Gables was close to my heart as a child (and let’s face it, it still is). Learning that Felicia Day, a long-time gamer and Youtube star, was also obsessed with Anne with an “e” made her an instant kindred spirit.
Felicia Day’s account of the beauty and terror of the creative process is inspiring. With all of her success, it’s easy to assume that she never struggles creatively and has a perfect life. Well. She struggles. She has bad days. And that’s ok. Because she’s human.
If you’re looking for a funny, light, inspirational read, I cannot recommend You’re Never Weird on the Internet (almost) highly enough.
